Hey folks, I want to tell you about a newly formed group on Facebook. It’s called the Nigerian Entertainment Lawyers, and it is a place where the brightest legal minds gather. I began the group yesterday when I saw we had none.
Why did I start the group?
1. It was about time.
2. I really believe wholeheartedly that Nigerian Entertainment Lawyers, particularly, are the ones to bring a true paradigm shift for the respect of the rule of law in Nigeria and across the continent. Many represent or will represent the celebrities and entertainment industry professionals that millions across the country want to know about. This gives this unique group a powerful opportunity to teach, educate and encourage compliance with the rule of law.
Examples of the enormous impact Nigerian Entertainment Lawyers have and will have are cases like:
a) Google’s Shut down of celebrity blogger Linda Ikeji’s blog. The entire nation of Nigeria quickly got up to speed on Intellectual Property Rights.
b) D’Banj v. Don Jazzy Mo’Hits Breakup (Partnership Agreements, Company Law and Intellectual Property Law).
c) Chocolate City v. Brymo (Breach of Contract).
d) D’Banj -Kanye West Joint Venture Deals.
3. I receive so many inquiries from law students of Nigerian heritage wanting to be entertainment lawyers. Now I can simply share a link with them, invite them into the fold and they can observe, ask questions and receive mentorship directly/indirectly from all of these great legal minds.
4. I also receive so many inquiries from Nigerian lawyers interested in entertainment law. I can repeat step 3 above.
5. Finally, I receive gazillion inquiries from artists and industry professionals for my services in Nigeria. I don’t practice in Nigeria. I practice in the USA. Now I can also point this people to the group, they can do their research and make contact with an entertainment attorney in that group located in Nigeria that they feel best fits their needs.
Who is in the Group?
The group is a closed group but the public can easily view its members.
Members include:
Ige Justin, COSON lawyer
Audu Maikori, Chocolate City Co-Founder & Law Allianz Founder
Seye Lawal, L & A Legal Consultants
Obi Asika, Storm Records Executive, Social Media Week Lagos
Basically some of the brightest legal minds in the industry. Lawyers don’t have to agree or be on the same page in terms of clients we represent. In fact we usually are not. However, we too need a place for us, even if we are on opposite side of the aisles.
Who Should Join/Will Benefit from Being a Part of Our Group?
- Law students of Nigerian heritage interested in the field of entertainment law.
- Lawyers of Nigerian heritage interested in the field of entertainment law.
- Practicing entertainment lawyers of Nigerian heritage.
- Non-practicing entertainment lawyers of Nigerian heritage who work in the entertainment industry.
- Non-Nigerian attorneys or law students who work in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
